Artist's Statement

Steven Schutz was born in 1963 and raised in Lincoln Nebraska, where he currently resides. Encouraged in the early years to pursue his artistic creativity by his brother, Barry Schutz, a diversified artist as well, and his mother, Diana. As his artistic nature developed, his influences would range from well known artists such as Van Gogh, Picasso, Salvador Dali and Kandinsky, to the psychedelic art of the late 1960s and early 1970s, as well as the subconscious stimuli that one experiences on a daily basis.

He attended College View Academy and upon his graduation in 1981 became the recipient of the coveted Union College Fine Arts Award. Steven has exhibited in several galleries, cooperatives, coffee shops and art fairs in Nebraska, as well as a group show that took him to Washington D.C., in 1991. His work has been published in two colored pencil art books that were a collaboration between the Color Pencil Society of America and Rockport Publishers, in 1994 and again in 1995.

Steven has been involved in some form of expression since early childhood and in 1999 he began to incorporate Bushido (the Martial Way), into his expressions, as well as his daily life. The term martial artisan is a compilation of two ingredients. Martial, referring to the martial arts as a way of living aware of each movement, thought and process, as well as the traditional sense of the physical act of training and studying the martial arts (Bushido). Artisan, referring to the trade specialty of the individual, whether it is drawing, wood working, metal work, writing, painting or another form of expression.

"I am forging a new way of art expression, that I call Surradelic Abstraction. My Surradelic art is a melding of the surreal, psychedelic, abstract, orthodox, as well as unorthodox styles of expression.   I hope that those who view and witness my work are positively affected and find that they can indeed have an extraordinary and sometimes challenging experience."
